Teaching Philosophy

According to Dr. Stephen Krashen, “Language is best taught when it is being used to transmit messages, not when it is explicitly taught for conscious learning.” Since 2016, I've been running a thrilling experiment at Wasatch Junior High School, as I've taken a program that was small and fledgling, with fewer than 80 students, and turned it into a program where I have taught more than 300 students this year. I've done it by shifting my focus from talking about grammar, to actually USING French in the classroom to listen, read, write and speak about things that students are interested in learning.

My students are assessed biweekly in listening and reading, and as they progress through level 1, in writing and speaking as well. By the end of French 2, it's common for my students to be able to write in the present and the past about a wide variety of interests, as well as about many aspects of Francophone culture.

I'm passionate about scaffolding language so it's accessible to learners at all levels, and to working with French students so they are able to demonstrate even greater proficiency than they thought was possible.

My background as a university educator puts me in the perfect position to help students bridge the gap between secondary and post-secondary learning, whether that's in an AP class or beyond.
